More than 160 Students Attend
"Job Search Clinic" at BSC

Focused upon building a career foundation, the recent Job Search Clinic at Bluefield State College attracted more than 160 BSC students.

The program was sponsored by the BSC Student Support Services and Career Planning & Placement offices, as well as Dr. Debbie Halsey-Hunter, Professor of Secretarial Science at BSC.

The four components of the program concentrated upon resume preparation (directed by Ms. Brenda Persin, Business Division, Southwest Virginia Community College), the job interview (directed by Mr. Harry Hull, Human Resource Director, Turner Vision), dressing for success (with five BSC students modeling attire for a job interview), and business dining etiquette (directed by Mr. Michael Palm, Director/Student Support Services at the Greenbrier Community College Center of BSC).

Persin stressed that each candidate's resume should be designed to land a job interview, and that resumes should be customized in consideration of the job the applicant is seeking. "The resume should reflect the applicant's skills, education, accomplishments, experience, and knowledge as they relate to the employment that is sought," she said.

Hull encouraged applicants to "prepare, prepare, prepare. Do research of your potential employer so you have some knowledge of the company. Dress appropriately, be truthful, and show appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the interview," he advised.

Palm discussed business dining etiquette. "if your interview includes a lunch or dinner, the employer wants to observe how you handle yourself in a social setting," he noted. "Take your cues from your host, be mannerly, and be yourself."
