More than 200 Area Youth
Participate in NCAA's NYSP
Program at BSC

More than 200 area youth, age 10-1 6, have participated in activities each day during the first week of the NCANs National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) at Bluefield State College.

Through a grant awarded to the College, BSC offers a variety of sports-related and life skills' instruction, along with recreational activities for program participants.

BSC Campus Life Director J.D. Carpenter, who serves as NYSP project administrator, noted, "Through this program, BSC is taking an active position in fulfilling its educational obligations to the community by addressing its community's youth needs. We're offering resources and facilities to aid in building a stronger educational foundation to the participants."

The NYSP program is underwritten for two years, was awarded to BSC as a result of a grant submitted by Annette Osborne (Director of Institutional Advancement & Planning) and Joan Buchanan (Program Assistant 11 for Campus Life). The NYSP program combines sports instruction with training of life skills, including team accomplishment, personal health, nutritional goals, and substance abuse prevention.

"We want the students in the program to acquire knowledge to provide themselves with stronger bodies and healthier minds, encouraging them to strive and set higher educational goals," Carpenter commented.
