After attending college for a semester, the duties of parenthood and work have kept Chris from pursuing a college degree. As a waitress, she works more than 40 hours a week and has little time beyond her responsibilities at work and at home to attend courses at a local college.
"The new Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies degree program at Bluefield State College is designed specifically for adults like Chris," noted Dr. Tom Blevins, Director of Distance Learning at BSC.
"Through this program, all courses needed for a college degree in Liberal Studies are offered at night, and are delivered primarily via television. Those students who can come to campus during the day may choose to take some course electives at the College, but students can earn a degree even when they can't get to campus on a regular basis."
As an example, Blevins said adult students in the program may take TV courses in "Internet Literacy," English 101 & 102, and College Algebra, satisfying associate degree requirements in English, math, and computer applications.
"This degree program was designed specifically for the working adult," he continued. "even when job and family responsibilities make it impossible for a student to view a televised class when it is broadcast, the student may use a VCR to tape it and watch it soon thereafter, when his/her schedule permits.
Additional information on the Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies' degree program at BSC may be obtained by calling (304) 327-4059. Blevins noted students may enroll in the program in time to begin classes at the start of the new semester, in January 2000.
