Endowments

Endowed funds assure that current and future generations of students benefit from a donor’s generosity. They also build the financial strength of an institution. The principal of these funds is invested in perpetuity by the Bluefield State College Foundation, and a portion of the earnings is distributed each year.

An endowed scholarship is a meaningful way to memorialize a family member, respected instructor or beloved mentor. They can be funded by a single gift, or through a pledge over a period of years. Donors who choose to build an endowment with a pledge can allocate part of each year’s gift to be distributed immediately to benefit current students.

Endowments grow through interest earned and additional gifts made after a fund is established. Bluefield State College Foundation encourages donors to help build the following endowed scholarships:

Bartlett-Welckler Scholarship Given to a woman over 25 years of age, a West Virginia Resident, who has already completed a year of college, who is now beginning the second year of college and taking a minimum of 12 semester hours.
   

Carl P. and Selba Meadows Boyd Scholarship

 

Awarded to graduate of Tazewell County ( Virginia) or McDowell County ( West Virginia) who has successfully completed 24 hours of college level course work maintaining a 2.5 GPA, who has declared a major, who demonstrates financial need, and who demonstrates a willingness to perform community service.
   
Broady Family Scholarship Awarded each year to an education major demonstrating need and a GPA of 2.5 or better.
   
Craddock Scholarship

Based on financial need of a full-time BSC student maintaining a 2.5 GPA. Preference is given to students pursuing a B.S. in engineering, computer science, nursing, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physical science or pre-medicine.

   
Douglas Crickmer Memorial Scholarship

Given to a student in mining engineering technology or similar engineering technology program that supports the needs of the mining industry who maintains a 2.5 GPA or better.

   
Brian A. Delp Humanitarian Athletic Award Awarded to full-time enrolled student-athletes who are entering junior year at BSC with GPA of 2.5, NCAA certification. Must be 2-year letterman at BSC currently participating in athletics.
   
Brian A. Delp Service Award

Annual service award presented to a student graduating from a baccalaureate degree program who has displayed dedicated community service involvement while a student at BSC.

   
Tom Joyner Foundation Fund

Awarded to assist students attending HBCU through graduation.

   
John and Elisabeth MacClarence Scholarship in Education

Available to residents of West Virginia or an out-of-state bordering county who have a declared major in the School of Education and a minimum 3.2 GPA.

   
Billy G. Moore Scholarship

Outstanding minority and Appalachian area students with an overall GPA of 3.0 and demonstrated financial need who are accepted by, or enrolled in, the School of Education, are eligible for assistance with tuition, books, and travel including conferences.

   
Mark & Martha Oblinger

Award based on financial need, 3.0 GPA and active membership in local church.

   
Pocahontas Electrical and Mining Institute

Awarded to students majoring in the field of mechanical, civil, electrical or mining engineering technologies.

   
Roy E. Pruett, Jr. Scholarship in Electrical Engineering Technology Awarded to students from West Virginia in the field of Electrical Engineering Technology and a student athlete who demonstrates financial need.
   
John J. and Sheila Belcher Rinehart Scholarship in Electrical Engineering Technology

Based on financial need and West Virginia residency, awarded to Electrical Engineering Technology students.

   
Akhtar Safder Scholarship

Based on financial need, given to juniors and seniors in mechanical engineering technology. Recipients must maintain a 2.0 GPA and perform some community service.

   
June Oblinger Shott Scholarship

Given to students from Southwest Virginia and Southern West Virginia to be used for tuition and fees.

   
Teacher Testing Scholarship

Awarded to high school graduates from Mercer or contiguous counties and based on financial need, the scholarship reimburses School of Education students for testing fees for SAT or ACT, Praxis I and Praxis II.

   
Wellington Swendall Book Scholarship

Awarded to minority students who show great academic promise.

   
WV Society of Washington, DC, Book Scholarship

Given to a regularly enrolled freshman student who is a legal resident of West Virginia or the son or daughter of a native West Virginian who shows high academic promise.

   
Mae Jerolee White Scholarship

Awarded to non-traditional student in the second or subsequent year of the nursing program who is a West Virginia resident from a rural county with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
