Scholarship Dinner 2007

“I give because I was blessed by the gifts of others.”

Each year in April, the BSC Foundation hosts a Scholarship Recognition Dinner that brings donors and the recipients of their generosity together. In many cases, the students would not have been able to attend an institution of higher education without financial assistance. The dinner provides the students an opportunity to thank their benefactors in person, and donors meet the individuals whose lives have been improved by their scholarship gifts. The 2007 dinner was attended by over 160 individuals, and the parents of Brian A. Delp, a student who was killed in a traffic accident in 2002, announced the endowment of the Brian A. Delp Humanitarian Athletic Award.

Most (71%) of the students attending Bluefield State College are first-generation college students, the first in their families to attend an institution of higher learning. Additionally, 70% qualify for Pell grants. Approximately 80% of the students at Bluefield State College receive some form of financial aid, which is provided primarily by generous individuals and local businesses.

Students also have to pay for housing, textbooks and living expenses, and those in the health professions and engineering also have lab fees. For many, these costs are beyond their means and would prevent them from furthering their education to pursue careers in professional fields.

Scholarships open the door to a better life for these students, their families and their communities that benefit from an educated, productive work force.

Bluefield State College provides scholarships to these students through the Annual Fund and Endowments. By making a gift to these funds through the Bluefield State College Foundation, you are directly contributing to a healthy future for our students and their communities.
