I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season filled with love and happiness to last throughout the new year.
I am indeed grateful to have had the opportunity to acquaint and reacquaint myself with alumni from the McDowell County area during the recent holidays. (Dr. Moore, myself and the Bluefield State College family hosted a reception in the county enabling all to meet and socialize with alumni and friends.)
Recently, I once again had the opportunity to meet a former student. During our long telephone conversation, we talked about what he knew and what I knew from the "good old" days. At some point he must have thought that he was boring me with the stories and questions concerning the buildings and professors. I ended our conversation with an invitation to return for a visit. My new found friend declined. He had experienced a negative outcome, thus transferring elsewhere.
Alumni, it is sad to think that for some former students/alumni, all wecan remember about the college are negative outcomes. I am sure that we all can remember negatives, but for many, there are positive memories. If we think hard enough, I am sure that there are some positives: lasting friendships, life mates, a quality, yet affordable education, and family anywhere we travel. These are memories that last forever. Don't allow the bad to outweigh the good.
In May, we will be extending our family once again. I extend the invitation to all alumni, young and old, to return to the "Terraced Hills," and fill each of us with lasting positive memories. Memories of Bluefield State College a place we all should be proud of!
