Bluefield State College's Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Elizabeth Belcher, Director of Human Resources, has been recertified by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

Betty Nash Blevins, Associate Professor of Nursing, and Beth Pritchett, Director of BS Nursing Program, were feature presenters at a workshop for home health nurses in Flatwoods. Blevins presented "The Pathophysiology of Diabetes Mellitus" and Pritchett presented "The History and Physical Exam of the Client with Diabetes Mellitus."

Dr. Thomas Blevins, Director of the Instructional Technology Center, Center for Extended Learning, and Academic Computing, delivered a presentation at the League for Innovation in the Community College's 1997 "Conference on Information Technology." His presentation was "Planning, Delivering, and Evaluating Distance Learning Content through Instructional Performance Systems Software (IPSI)."

John Cardwell, Interim Vice President for Student Affairs, and Ralph Patsel, Registrar, were featured in an article, "Offices Collaborate on Successful On-Site Registration Project" in the nationally-distributed "Enrollment Management Report."

J. D. Carpenter, Director ofCampus Life, has been named national president-elect of Gamma Beta Phi. Carpenter also presented a "Team-Building Workshop" for the State college system central office personnel focusing upon the "dynamics of adjusting your style of leadership to work with individuals who may not share your professional viewpoints."

Bernadette Dragich, Associate Professor of Nursing, was a featured presenter at the fifth annual Associate Degree of Nursing Faculty Development Conference in Dayton, Ohio.

Dr. Ramona Fletcher, associate professor of English, won second place, along with a prize of $150, for a short story entitled "Garden Journal," in the West Virginia Writers Annual Spring Competition" at the West Virginia Writers annual conference at Cedar Lakes.

Frank Hart, chair of BSC's Division of Engineering Technology and Computer Science, has been installed as vice-chair of operations for the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET).

Dr. Sudhakar Jamkhandi, Director of the Center for International Understanding (CIU), attended and participated in the 1997 "Slovakia in the Lines of Force of Europe and the World" program in the Slovak Republic.

Dr. Patricia Mulvey, Professor of History, was selected to be a "Coolidge Fellow" at the 1997 Association for Religion and Intellectural Life (ARIL) Research Colloquium at Columbia University.

Dr. Garrett Olmsted, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Sociology, was a featured presenter at the Harvard University conference on "Metals in Antiquity." Olmsted will examine metallurgy, fabrication, and social context in his presentation, "Mint Masters and Metal Smiths--Iron Age Europe."

Michael Palm, Student Services Director, has been installed as president of the White Sulphur Springs Rotary Club.

Sheila Parks, Associate Professor of Nursing, spent four weeks of her summer as a Nurse Practitioner on an Indian Reservation.

Patricia Wimmer, Campus Life Program Assistant, has been selected for inclusion in International Who's Who of Professionals.

James Worsham, Coordinator of Campus Publications and adjunct history instructor, was a keynote speaker at the national meeting of the Descendants of the Veterans of the Mexican War. Additionally, the Journal of the Mexican War features an article in its Fall 1997 issue, written by Worsham and based upon his research at the National Archives involving the "Mounted Rifles."
