Students
should look at
the schedule to
see if the course
title includes
the designation
DL. If
so, the class
has NO scheduled
meetings. Registered
students will
be mailed a syllabus
and course outline
with directions
for communication
with the instructor
via e-mail. Students
are expected to
closely follow
the syllabus and
course outline
in order to proceed
through the course
and complete the
sequenced assignments. All
DL course syllabi
are available
from the ADL link
at the top of
this page. All
DL students must
either have home
access to e-mail
and the WWW or
come to one of
the BSC campus
sites to activate
their e-mail accounts. ADL
courses will be
delivered through
the WebCT or the
CART interface.
If
the DL class includes
an ITV designation, students
in some cases may view
the video programs on
WSWP-TV, Channel 9. Students
outside the WV PBS viewing
area will be mailed the
entire set of videos with
the syllabus after registration
through Dr. Blevins. If
the DL class includes
an IVN designation, the
students may attend the
live IVN sessions at the
BSC campus nearest them
if they wish. Otherwise,
they will be mailed a
complete set of videos
for the course along with
the syllabus and study
guide. If
the course is listed as
DL only, then depending
upon the instructor, content
may be made available
via access to the BSC
computer network (provided
by the instructor to you
upon registration and
receipt of your e-mail
account) or by videotape
(mailed to you after registration).
Textbooks
and study guides are available
through the BSC Bookstore
at (304)327-4182. They
take checks, MC, or VISA
as means of payment and
ship books next day UPS
to your street address
(no PO boxes).
BSC
Distance Learning (DL)
Modalities
IVN: IVN
or Interactive Video Network
is a two-way video-audio
system where the students
are seated in electronic
classrooms at either Bluefield,
Beckley, Lewisburg, Summersville,
or Welch. The
instructor is usually
at the Bluefield site
but may be at the Lewisburg
site. The
strength of this modality
is that the students and
instructor can see and
hear one another simultaneously. These
classes meet at the time,
day, campus scheduled
each week and students
are expected to attend
each class.
ITV: ITV
or Instructional Television
refers to courses which
meet seven times during
the semester at whichever
campus the course is scheduled. the
majority of instruction
is provided by having
students view video programs
which are broadcast weekly
on WSWP-TV, Channel 9. The
seven class meetings give
the instructor time to
discuss the important
concepts raised in the
videos and give mid-term
and final exams. Sometimes
these video programs are
available only by videotape
from the BSC Center for
Extended Learning located
in the BSC PE Building,
Room 202. Students
taking these classes are
expected to attend class,
view videos on Channel
9 or by tape, read the
text and study guide,
take two exams and write
a paper.
Students
will meet their instructor
during the class day,
time, and campus where
the class is scheduled
during the first week
of the semester. Students
are expected to attend
this orientation. At
this time students will
receive a syllabus.
Students
who request copies of
ITV video segments may
bring tapes to the BSC
Center for Extended Learning
for copies. Lewisburg
students may see Mr. Steve
Butler for these services.
Bluefield
students may view videos
in the Instructional Technology
lab located in the Ned
Shott PE Building, room
403. Lewisburg
students may view these
videos in the LRC at the
BSC Greenbrier Center
by seeing Mr. Bob Coston. Students
are encouraged to view
the videos on WSWP-TV,
Channel 9 each week and
to set their VCRs to copy
these segments, thereby
using dubbing services
as a backup.
DL:
DL or Asynchronous Distance
Learning (ADL) refers
to any combination of
the above modalities (ITV-DL,
IVN-DL or DL) with an
e-mail and World Wide
Web (WWW) component in
order to deliver instruction
to the students in their
homes at their convenience. Usually
instruction is delivered
by videotape, e-mail,
WWW, text-study guide,
and instructor-prepared
study guides. Exams
may be open book or proctored. Projects
and papers are an integral
part of the course content. Also,
be sure to note that if
your course has a Web
component, you will access
either WebCT or CART for
your course. |
