idea guy Information Literacy- What is it?

Information Literacy- a definition
The College recognizes information literacy as the “ability to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information” (American Library Association, 1989). The mission of the library Information literacy program is to promote its instructional services as a bridge to information literacy empowerment between our college patrons and their research needs. The IL program aims to serve the college community in the development of a collective information literacy program that will provide individuals with lifelong learning skills for all aspects of their lives, academically, professionally and personally.

IL Goals

  • To promote the concept that information literacy is an integral part of the academic experience in and out of the classroom.
  • To guide professors and students toward the understanding that the librarians' goals are interconnected with their own course goals and curricular needs.
  • Instruct and train students to develop the ability to identify, evaluate and legally use information critically, creatively and ethically beyond the educational environment.
  • Offer liaison services to faculty, relevant groups and individuals for self directed, collaborative and professional development teaching that incorporate information literacy objectives and outcomes.
  • To provide programmatic instruction that addresses the needs of the University community.
  • To promote the use of library resources in all formats.

We embrace the national Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education: (http://www.acrl.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/informationliteracycompetency.htm)

Library Mission:

The goal of Wendell G. Hardway Library of Bluefield State College is to lead the campus in providing access to information and education in information seeking skills.  The Library offers information literacy instruction and personal assistance to students and researchers in the use of its collections. These are developed in collaboration with faculty to support the College curriculum. The Library's resources and services promote the independent pursuit of knowledge, contribute to the mission of Bluefield State College, and are available for use by students, alumni and employees of the College, residents of the community, and citizens of the state of West Virginia. In recognition of Bluefield State's rich heritage as a Historically Black College, the Library also collects, preserves, and makes available primary source materials that document the history of the College.
