INSTITUTIONAL REPORT
Bluefield State College offers a fully accredited, state approved program to prepare teachers for the nation and state’s schools. The West Virginia Department of Education established a pass rate of 100 percent for all graduates completing state approved teacher preparation programs. Bluefield State College achieved a 100 percent pass rate for the 41 program completers of this institution’s program from September 1, 2001 through August 31, 2002. Highlights of this institution’s program are as follows:
· In 1895, Bluefield State College was established.
· In 1905, the Teacher Education program was established at this institution.
· The institution places teacher education candidates in field experiences and student teaching in a total of 18 public schools. Of these public schools, 83% qualify for Title I services and have an additional 21% of students receiving special education services.
· Currently, 229 students are enrolled in the teacher education program.
· Between September 1, 2001 and August 31, 2002, 27 students completed the teacher education program.
· During the same period, 29 were enrolled in student teaching.
· Prior to student teaching, students complete 124 clock hours of field placements related to their programs of study.
· Student teaching requires 12 weeks or 360 clock hours of actual supervised classroom teaching.
· There are currently 4 full time faculty members and 1 adjunct faculty member who supervise student teaching.
· The student teaching/supervising faculty ratio for Spring, 2002 was 5.80:1.
