Computer Science Resources on the Web
There are many excellent computer science resources on the Web.Dictionaries and Acronyms
- The Free On-Line Dictionary of Computing is a great place to look for computer science terms and acronyms.
General Computer Magazines and E-Zines:
- ZD Net contains the online presences of Ziff-Davis Inc., publishers of PC Magazine, Computer Life, Computer Shopper, and 14 other computer magazines in the USA -- even more overseas! This is a good site for technical tips, downloads (on your home computer, please), and current articles about the latest in hardware and software.
- Windows Magazine makes back issues for the last 5 years available on its web site. Articles are well-written, and seem oriented toward business users. For Windows 95 and up -- no obsolete systems here!
- Crossroads is the ACM student magazine. It's the first ACM periodical online! Each issue has a theme; Summer 1998 is Multimedia. Crossroads is always interested in student writing on computer topics.
- developer.com is a huge collection of information on many topics. This site calls itself "The leading source of technical information."
C++ Web Sites
MCSE (Microsoft Certified Software Engineer) Exam Resources:
- C/C++ Users Journal is very slow to load, but the code archives and development tools are worth the wait. This is also a good place to look for programming jobs.
- An entire textbook, Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming using C++ , is available on the web. It's well organized, and has a very detailed table of contents.
Some of the best MCSE resources are the "brain dump" web sites.
Alternative Operating Systems
- TestFree offers two free sample tests -- one for MSCE and one for Novell certification.
There are several alternatives to Microsoft operating systems. Linux is probably the best-known.
Finally, don't miss the Hardway Library Guide to Computer Science Resources for books, magazines and online sources available here at Bluefield State.
- C|Net's introduction to five OS's is a good starting point.
- The Linux Homepage offers links to Linux user groups, web sites and other resources world-wide.
- Linux International also has an impressive set of links to resources and Linux news.
