Humanities and Literature Resources on the Internet
General Humanities Sites
- Voice of the Shuttle is a collection of many good web sites in a variety of fields, and a few "Highlight" sites are selected for each field. This is a great starting point!
- Arts & Letters Daily gathers articles, book reviews and essays on many humanities-related topics. This is a great place to find out about current ideas.
- Arts Journal is another daily roundup of arts and culture news. It's focused on music, visual arts and publishing.
Art and museums
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art web site contains images and information from all of the museum's current exhibitions.
- London's National Gallery web site contains images from the museum's collections, which focus on European painting from 1260 to 1900. Each image is accompanied by information about the painter, the subject of the painting, and the history of the painting.
Literature
- Online Literary Criticism Collection The Internet Public Library's Online Literary Criticism Collection contains 4346 critical and biographical websites about authors and their works that can be browsed by author, title, or by nationality and literary period.
- LANIC Literature Section LANIC, the Latin American Network Information Center, is operated by the University of Texas. The literature section contains links to regional and national literature sites, as well as online journals. Many of the links are in Spanish or Portuguese, but a few are in English.
- Index to Gale Reference Works Index to Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism, Nineteenth Century Literary Criticism, and Twentieth Century Literary Criticism, all found in our reference collection.
- New York Times Book Review Provides access to book reviews published in the New York Times since 1980. also includes information about selected authors, has first chapters, and links to book discussion forums. Access is free but registration is necessary.
- African American Literature at Bluefield State College Library Includes links to literary resources on the web, lists books available to BSC students, and has links to author information.
- The Atlantic Online Poetry Pages Provides interviews with poets, articles about poetry and by poets, and the text of some poems, including sound files. Site is searchable by keyword.

- Poetry Daily presents a different contemporary poem each day.
- Documenting the American South is a collection of digitized books including slave narratives, Civil War diaries, and novels. Authors include Kate Chopin, Edgar Allan Poe, and many others.
- The University of Virginia's Electronic Text Center contains many digitized texts in a variety of languages.
