Big Blues Dominate Field in National Championship Win
State College, PA—It is official. Bluefield State College now has a National Championship to add to their trophy case. This past weekend the Big Blues Men’s Golf Team traveled to State College, PA and participated in the USCAA Golf National Championship for the first time in school history. The moment was not too big for the Team as they lead from the very beginning and secured the College’s first ever National Championship.
The USCAA National Championship was hosted at Penn State University at the schools Blue Course, where it has been hosted for the past several years. Bluefield State led the 18 team field after Day 1 with an impressive 301 score, 16 strokes ahead of 2nd place. Day 2 saw an impressive push from the 2nd and 3rd place schools (SUNY Canton & Cleary University). SUNY Canton shot a 306 Day 2 for a total of 623 and Cleary shot a 307 for a total of 628 to make a push for the lead. But the Big Blues stood firm and shot a respectable 311 Day 2 for a total of 612, 11 shots ahead of SUNY Canton to secure the National Championship.
“This was just an incredible team performance this weekend,” says Head Coach Cole Sulmonetti. “I could not be prouder of this team. The 301 from Day 1 was the best the team shot since Coach Fong and I took over in March and we could not be happier. Our 6 seniors deserved this Championship and we are ecstatic that we could provide them with this opportunity.”
Four members of the team made the All-American list. Blake Hash, who finished 4th overall with a 148, and Kirk Collins (151), who finished 6th, made the 1st Team All-American. JT Lester, tied for 11th, and David Woodrum, who tied for 15th made the 2nd Team All-American.
